The vaginal microflora, with its composition and metabolic products, plays a vital role in women's health. During childbearing years, Döderlein bacteria (lactobacilli) are particularly important. They achieve their protective function through the secretion of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and bacteriocins. These substances prevent pathogenic germs from multiplying and colonizing. Excessive vaginal hygiene or antibiotic therapy can disrupt this protective flora and thus increase susceptibility to infection.
