Action and mechanism

Ocular decongestant. Adrenergic, it acts by producing vasoconstriction at the conjunctival level and consequently reducing conjunctival congestion. Duration of action: approximately 6 hours.

Instructions

- Temporary symptomatic relief of [CONJUNCTIVITIS] (burning, [EYE IRRITATION], itching and excessive tearing) due to eye allergies, minor irritations and nonspecific catarrhal conjunctivitis.

Posology

Ophthalmic route:
- Adults and children over 6 years: Apply 1 or 2 drops in each eye 2-3 times a day as needed, maximum 4 times a day.
- Children aged 2 to 6 years: always administer under strict medical supervision.
- Children under 2 years: Use is contraindicated.

Guidelines for proper administration

- Wash your hands.
- Look upwards. Pull down your lower eyelid to make a pouch.
- Hold the dropper as close as possible to the sac without touching the eye. To avoid contamination of the medication, it is important that the tip of the applicator does not come into contact with any surface (including the eye).
- Apply the prescribed amount of eye drops to the bag.
- Blink a couple of times to spread the drop over the entire surface of the eye.
Close your eye for about two minutes (do not close it too tightly) or press on the tear duct margin to reduce systemic absorption. In single-dose presentations, the amount contained in the package is sufficient for a single use in both eyes. Discard the package after each use. If another topical ophthalmic medication is being used, this medication should be applied at least ten minutes apart. Eye ointments should be applied last.

Contraindications

- Allergy to the medication.
- [CLOSED-ANGLE GLAUCOMA] or predisposition to it, as it can worsen the disease.
- Children under 2 years old.

Precautions

- It may mask symptoms in patients with [OPHTHALMOLOGICAL INFECTION].
- Due to the possibility of systemic absorption, it should not be used indiscriminately in [HIGH PRESSURE], [ANGINA PECTORIS], [CORONARY INSUFFICIENCY], [HYPERTHYROIDISM], [DIABETES], [PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA].
- Patients undergoing treatment with MAO inhibitors or other potential blood pressure raisers.
- Patients with dry rhinitis and [keratoconjunctivitis].

Advice to the patient

- If no relief is obtained within 2 days, or if redness increases or persists, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
- Treatment should not exceed 7 days. Prolonged and frequent use may cause eye congestion and dryness.
- If the patient uses contact lenses, they must be removed before administering the medication.
- If severe eye pain, headache, rapid changes in vision, rapid appearance of floaters, acute redness of the eye, pain after exposure to light, or double vision occur, you should evaluate the clinical situation.

Pregnancy

No animal studies have been conducted. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans. It is unknown whether ophthalmic tetryzoline can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women; the possibility of systemic absorption should be considered. Although fetal harm is not expected with the use of moderate doses for a short period (no more than 3 days), the use of this drug is acceptable only when safer therapeutic alternatives are unavailable.

Lactation

It is unknown whether tetryzoline is excreted in breast milk. The potential for systemic absorption of ophthalmic oxymetazoline should be considered, as young children are more sensitive to the pharmacological and toxic effects of sympathomimetics. Use with caution, always using moderate doses for no more than 3 days.

Children

Use is contraindicated in children under 2 years of age. In children aged 2 to 6 years, use only under medical supervision. Children, especially younger children, may be more sensitive to the toxic effects of systemic absorption. Furthermore, eye redness may occur in children due to illnesses that may require medical attention, such as allergies, fever, colds, or measles. The use of tetryzoline eye drops is not recommended in children under 6 years of age. It is always recommended to use moderate doses for no more than 3 days.

Seniors

The safety and efficacy of ophthalmic tetryzoline in the elderly have not been specifically established; however, the elderly may be more sensitive to the adverse effects of sympathomimetics. It should be noted that these patients are more prone to undiagnosed angle-closure glaucoma, so caution is advised when using this medication, always using moderate doses for no more than 3 days.

Adverse reactions

- Occasionally, [EYE IRRITATION], burning, [BLURRED VISION], [MYDRIASIS]. With excessive use or high doses: rebound congestion (redness and irritation).
- In exceptional cases, signs of systemic absorption may occur: headaches, palpitations, nervousness, nausea, sweating, headache, increased blood pressure, and weakness.
