Description
DexaCaps is a medicinal product in the form of capsules that will help you deal with a dry, tiring cough.
Composition
The active substances are: dextromethorphan hydrobromide (Dextromethorphani hydrobromidum), dry extract of linden inflorescence (Tiliae flos), dry extract of lemon balm leaf (Melissae folium).
1 capsule contains:
dextromethorphan hydrobromide - 20.00 mg
dry extract of linden inflorescence - 167.00 mg
lemon balm leaf dry extract - 50.00 mg
Excipients: pregelatinized corn starch, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate. Capsule shell: yellow iron oxide (E172), red iron oxide (E172), titanium dioxide (E171), gelatin.
Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual dose for adolescents over 12 years of age and adults is 1 capsule 3 times daily.
- Administer the medicine after a meal.
- The medicine should be taken by swallowing the capsule whole with an appropriate amount of liquid.
- A drug intended for use when symptoms occur.
Action
Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It works by inhibiting the cough center in the central nervous system, thereby reducing the frequency of dry cough attacks.
Indications
DexaCaps is used in cases of tiring, dry cough of various origins, not related to the retention of secretions in the respiratory tract.
Contraindications
When not to use DexaCaps ?
- if you are allergic to the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine;
- in case of cough with a large amount of sputum;
- in patients with bronchial asthma;
- in patients with severe liver disease;
- in patients with respiratory failure or at risk of respiratory failure;
- if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO) at the same time and within 14 days after their discontinuation;
- in patients taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs);
- in patients taking mucolytic drugs (thinning mucus in the respiratory tract).
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rare side effects (affecting less than 1 in 1,000 people):
- somnolence.
Frequency unknown (frequency cannot be estimated based on available data):
- allergic reactions of the skin and respiratory system,
- agitation, confusion, with
- dizziness, convulsions,
- respiratory depression,
- vomiting, nausea, diarrhea,
- rash.
Warnings and precautions
- There have been reports of abuse of dextromethorphan-containing medications. Caution is advised when using this medication in adolescents and young adults, as well as in patients with a history of drug or substance abuse.
- If you have a chronic or persistent cough, consult your doctor before using this medicine. If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, if you have a recurring cough, or if your cough is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, consult your doctor or pharmacist. These may be signs of a serious condition.
- Store in a tightly closed container at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
- Protect from moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Use of other medications
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or are planning to take.
DexaCaps may interact with:
- MAO inhibitors (a 14-day interval should be maintained),
- linezolid,
- CYP2D6 inhibitors, e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine, quinidine, terbinafine, amiodarone, flecainide and propafenone, sertraline, bupropion, methadone, cinacalcet, haloperidol, perphenazine and thioridazine,
- with alcohol and sedative and sleeping pills.
Taking the medicine with food and drink
The medicine should be taken after a meal, swallowing the capsule whole with an appropriate amount of liquid.
Drinking alcohol is not recommended during treatment.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Do not use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Use of the drug in children and adolescents
The medicine should not be used in children under 12 years of age.
Driving and operating machinery
Due to the possibility of drowsiness, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.
