Advanced technology is used to produce BioAstin natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus algae. The initial growth stage of these algae takes place in closed pool systems with a capacity of up to 40,000 liters. The next short "red dye" cycle lasting 5-7 days takes place in open spawning ponds of 50,000 liters. At each stage of BioAstin production, Haematococcus algae cultures are inspected using a microscope to ensure that the cultures are clean and free of contaminants. After the "dye red" cycle is complete, the algae is collected, washed and dried. The final step in BioAstin production is the extraction of dried Haematococcus algal biomass using supercritical carbon dioxide in oleoresin without biological or environmental contaminants. The supercritical extraction process is a key production step that ensures the proper efficacy, purity and quality of BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin. There is a common misconception that closed microalgae breeding pools protect against contamination by other organisms. However, this is not true. Such closed cultures may also be contaminated with other algae, fungi or protozoa. In such a situation, the removal of biological contaminants from closed ponds can be very difficult due to the specificity of this type of culture systems. Indeed, ongoing contamination from closed farms has led to serious problems for algae formulators in California, Europe and Hawaii (not Cyanotech). Closed and open spawning pool systems have been developed based on many years of Cyanotech experience.
