Description
Pine syrup is a combination drug containing the active ingredients pine cetin extract, anise tincture, and codeine phosphate. This product is intended for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age and has antitussive properties.
Composition
The active substances of the syrup are: pine cetin extract (Pini extractum fluidum) DER 1: 0.9-1.1 extractant: ethanol 96 (v/v), anise tincture (Anisi tinctura) DER 1: 4.5-5.5 extractant: ethanol 70% (v/v) and codeine phosphate ( Codeini phosphas hemihydricus ).
15 ml of syrup (1 tablespoon) contains 1283.1 mg of pine cetin extract, 194.4 mg of anise tincture, 9.72 mg of codeine phosphate.
Excipients are: calcium lactate pentahydrate, diluted phosphoric acid, sucrose, purified water.
15 ml of the product contains approximately 12 g of sucrose.
Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dosage for adults is 15 ml of syrup, three times daily. The dosage for adolescents aged 12-18 is 10-15 ml three times daily. The medicine can be measured using the measuring cup included in the package.
Indications
The syrup is indicated for occasional use in case of a tiring, dry cough occurring in the course of upper respiratory tract infections.
Contraindications
The drug should not be used in case of allergy to any of the ingredients, as well as in patients with bronchial asthma or a tendency to bronchospasm, with acute respiratory failure, addicted to opioid drugs, with chronic constipation and in people with very rapid metabolism involving CYP2D6.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Adverse effects caused by complex pine syrup include: drowsiness, dizziness, drops in blood pressure, decreased respiratory rate, bronchospasm, constipation, biliary colic, nausea, vomiting, difficulty urinating and a feeling of dry mouth.
The above-mentioned ailments occur with unknown frequency.
Warnings and precautions
Codeine inhibits the cough reflex, therefore it is intended only to relieve dry cough - do not use in patients who expectorate sputum.
Particular caution should be exercised when administering the product to persons addicted to drugs and opioids or taking morphine agonists or antagonists.
Particular caution should also be exercised in patients with: central nervous system (CNS) depression, respiratory depression and chronic lung diseases, increased intracranial pressure or head injuries, biliary tract diseases including gallstones, renal failure, inflammatory or obstructive intestinal diseases, and the elderly.
This medicine contains ethanol (15 ml of syrup contains 1156.2 mg of 96% ethanol) - it is harmful to people with alcoholism. The product also contains sucrose (15 ml of syrup contains approximately 12 g of sugar) - it should not be administered to people with disorders associated with fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.
Anethole contained in anise tincture may cause allergic reactions.
Store this medicine at room temperature. Do not freeze.
Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Use of other medications
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
This medicine contains codeine. Due to the possibility of overdose, ensure that none of the medications you are taking contain this substance.
Pine syrup complex interacts with: benzodiazepines and barbituric acid derivatives, neuroleptics, clonidine, opioid drugs (codeine intensifies the depressant effect on the CNS), glutethimide (used with codeine may cause a state of euphoria), MAO inhibitors (and within 14 days after their discontinuation), antihistamines, drugs lowering blood pressure, metoclopramide (codeine may cause a weakening of the effect on intestinal peristalsis).
In addition, codeine may increase the respiratory depressant effect of other opioid drugs and intensify the effects of ethanol.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
This medicinal product is not recommended for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Use of the drug in children and adolescents
The medicinal product is permitted for use in adolescents over 12 years of age.
It is not recommended to administer the syrup to adolescents with respiratory disorders, neuromuscular disorders, severe cardiac or respiratory disorders, upper respiratory tract or lung infections, multiple organ injuries or extensive surgical procedures.
Driving and operating machinery
The syrup may impair psychophysical abilities and the ability to drive and operate machinery.
