Folate (folic acid) contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism; contributes to normal hematopoiesis and maternal tissue growth during pregnancy; folic acid supplementation increases maternal folate levels; low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the fetus.
