OSTENIL MINI – Injection for pain relief in small joints

OSTENIL MINI is a viscoelastic solution containing 1.0% sodium hyaluronate for injection into small joints, used to treat osteoarthritis-related pain and restricted mobility. The transparent solution contains natural, highly purified sodium hyaluronate obtained through fermentation and is free of animal proteins. OSTENIL MINI supports the lubricating and cushioning function of the synovial fluid and can thus alleviate discomfort in affected joints. The medical device is supplied as a sterile pre-filled syringe and is intended for single use only.

Areas of application

OSTENIL MINI is used to treat pain and restricted movement resulting from degenerative or traumatic changes in small synovial joints. These include, among others, the facet joints of the lumbar spine, the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb, the proximal joint of the big toe, and the temporomandibular joint. The injection must only be administered by physicians experienced and trained in intra-articular injections.

Application and dosage

OSTENIL MINI is injected directly into the affected joint, if necessary under imaging guidance to precisely target the joint space. The injection is typically administered 1 to 3 times at weekly intervals. Multiple joints can be treated simultaneously. Depending on the severity of the joint disease, the beneficial effects of a treatment cycle of three intra-articular injections can last for at least six months. Sodium hyaluronate itself is broken down within a few days; treatment cycles can be repeated if necessary.

Important information and contraindications

OSTENIL MINI must not be used if there is a known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. Treatment is not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for patients with inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. If joint effusion is present, it should be reduced before injection. National guidelines for intra-articular injections (especially thorough disinfection and infection prophylaxis) must be strictly followed. OSTENIL MINI must not be used if the pre-filled syringe or sterile packaging is damaged; opened solutions must be discarded immediately and must not be resterilized.
