Description
ACTION AND MECHANISM
Magnesium is an organic supplement considered an essential mineral for nutrition. It participates in numerous enzyme systems involved in energy production from food. It is also actively involved in protein synthesis and maintaining the electrical characteristics of the neuromuscular system.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- [RENAL FAILURE] severe: Risk of hypermagnesemia.
- [HEART BLOCK], [ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE].
- Diabetic coma.
- [MYASTHENIA GRAVIS].
- [CHRONIC DIARRHEA], [ULCERATIVE COLITIS].

- Symptoms of [APPENDICITIS].
INDICATIONS
[MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY]: prevention of magnesium deficiency states, in the case of a diet poor in vegetables and unrefined cereals (with husks), which manifest with weakness and muscle cramps.
INTERACTIONS
The following interactions of magnesium with other drugs have been documented:- Azole antifungal agents (ketoconazal, itraconazole): The therapeutic effects of the azole antifungal agent may be reduced due to a possible increase in gastric pH caused by the magnesium salts. In this case, the antifungal agent should be administered at least two hours before the magnesium.- Oral quinolones: Possible reduction in oral absorption of the quinolone. Space out administration.- Tetracyclines (except doxycycline): Possible reduction in tetracycline absorption. Space out administration.- Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS): Metabolic alkalosis may be observed due to increased absorption of unneutralized bicarbonate. A reduction in the potassium-lowering effect of PSS may also occur. The mechanism of action of these effects is the increase in intestinal absorption of unneutralized bicarbonate due to the binding of magnesium by sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Therefore, if possible, magnesium administration should be discontinued during PSS therapy or, otherwise, doses should be spaced at least several hours apart.- Delavirdine: antacids containing magnesium salts can reduce the absorption of delavirdine, which can result in subtherapeutic levels. Space administration at least 1 hour apart.- Quinidine: serum concentrations of quinidine may be elevated, increasing the toxic and pharmacological effects of the drug. This is because the increase in urinary pH can lead to an increase in renal tubular reabsorption of quinidine.- Digitalis glycosides: magnesium can inhibit the absorption of digitalis glycosides.- Alcohol and glucose: increase magnesium excretion.
RULES FOR CORRECT ADMINISTRATION
Take with or just before food to improve absorption. Each film-coated tablet should be swallowed whole, with a glass of water, without breaking or chewing.
POSOLOGY
- Adults and children > 12 years, oral: Average dose: 2 tablets /12 h.
PRECAUTIONS
- Do not administer to children under 12 years of age unless medically advised.- Do not use this medication continuously.- Monitor blood magnesium levels.- Ingestion on an empty stomach may cause diarrhea.
PRECAUTIONS RELATING TO EXCIPIENTS
- This medicine contains lactose. Patients with hereditary [LACTOSE INTOLERANCE] or galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
In some cases and always related to high doses, the following may occur: [NAUSEA], [VOMITING], hypotension, and [DIARRHEA]. If adverse reactions are observed, treatment should be discontinued and the pharmacovigilance systems notified.
