The three life stages of hair:
Hair growth is not a continuous process but occurs in three successive phases:
During the anagen phase, which lasts 3 to 7 years depending on gender and individual factors, the hair grows continuously at a rate of approximately 0.3 mm per day (i.e., 1 cm per month). In this phase, the hair root is anchored deep in the dermis. At its full size, it fills the entire hair follicle. New keratinocytes are generated in the matrix, pushing the older ones outwards, thus lengthening the hair.

During the catagen phase, which lasts 3 to 4 weeks, the keratinocytes of the hair root degenerate and hair growth ceases. The hair root loses volume, slowly migrates to the skin surface, and the connection to the dermal papilla is severed, leading to the death of the hair.

During the telogen phase, which lasts 3 to 4 months, the hair falls out naturally due to external influences such as friction from brushing or the pressure of a new root forming under the scalp. This is followed by a resting phase, the so-called latency period, until a new cycle begins.

Proper nutrition can positively influence the important growth phase of hair: proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids are crucial factors for healthy hair. A lack of certain nutrients can shorten or even interrupt the hair growth phase.
