Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), also known as common comfrey, bonewort, or woundwort, belongs to the borage family (Boraginaceae). The name "comfrey" comes from Old High German and refers to its use. "Bein" meant bones of any kind. "Well" describes the healing of plant wounds and, more broadly, the healing of bones. External applications include the treatment of bruises, sprains, and strains. Preparations made primarily from the root, but also from the herb, are used.
