Description
Folic acid dietary supplement, useful in cases of reduced dietary intake or increased nutritional needs. Folic acid supplementation in pregnant women contributes to the growth of maternal tissue and increases maternal folate levels. Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the fetus. In women of childbearing age, a beneficial effect is obtained with a daily folic acid supplement of 400 mcg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception. The development of neural tube defects in the fetus is due to several risk factors; addressing any one of these factors may not have a beneficial effect.

Property
- Folic acid : This B vitamin contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy. It is essential for the increase in maternal red blood cell count, the formation of the placenta, and the growth of the fetus, uterus, breasts, and other maternal tissues. In addition to the benefits mentioned, folic acid contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and the normal metabolism of homocysteine, an amino acid that, when present in high amounts, increases the incidence of cardiovascular disease in both women and men.
