Herpes simplex labialis
Cold sores are a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. Around 90% of all people carry the virus, and approximately 30% of those infected experience recurrent infections. In about 1% of virus carriers, symptoms occur monthly.
The special importance of L-lysine in herpes
L-lysine is an essential amino acid that the body can only obtain through food. Herpes viruses require the amino acid arginine to grow. Lysine is an antagonist of arginine. If more lysine than arginine is present, the herpes labialis virus incorporates lysine into its DNA, which leads to a halt in viral growth. Therefore, L-lysine can support the dietary management of herpes simplex labialis. Vegetarians, in particular, often have a lysine deficiency, as it is primarily found in animal products.
Nutrition tips for a herpes infection
L-arginine promotes the outbreak of a herpes infection and encourages viral replication. Therefore, foods rich in arginine, such as grains, nuts, and chocolate, should be avoided. Foods rich in lysine, such as legumes, beans, potatoes, dairy products, fish, bean sprouts, green vegetables, parsley, celery, beets, orange fruits (apricots), pears, and grapes, should be favored.
