Description

Tussidex is a medicinal product in the form of soft capsules that suppresses coughing with a tiring cough.

Composition

The active substance is dextromethorphan hydrobromide ( Dextromethorphani hydrobromidum ).

One soft capsule contains 30 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide ( Dextromethorphani hydrobromidum ).

Excipients: macrogol 400; diethylene glycol monoethyl ether; glycerol; propylene glycol; purified water. Shell composition: gelatin; glycerol; sorbitol (dry residue from 70% sorbitol solution); cochineal red (E 124); purified water.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

A drug for oral use.

Adults and adolescents from 12 years of age: the usual dose is 1 capsule every 6-8 hours.

Do not take more than 4 capsules per day (120 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide).

Action

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It works by inhibiting the cough center in the central nervous system, thereby reducing the frequency of dry cough attacks.

Indications

Tussidex is used in cases of tiring, dry cough of various origins, not related to the retention of secretions in the respiratory tract.

Contraindications

Do not use this medicinal product if you: are allergic to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of this medicine; have bronchial asthma; have severe respiratory failure

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Adverse reactions occurring:

Rare (less than 1 in 1,000 patients, but more than 1 in 10,000 patients): stomach pain, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, headache.

Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 patients, including isolated cases): allergic reactions: rash, hives, angioedema (serious allergic reaction which causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat that may cause difficulty in breathing, bronchospasm causing difficulty in breathing or wheezing).

Warnings and precautions

There have been reports of abuse of medications containing dextromethorphan; long-term use can lead to addiction. Therefore, treatment should be short-term.

You should be careful and tell your doctor if you: are taking medicines such as certain antidepressants or antipsychotics, Tussidex may interact with them, causing changes in mental status (e.g. agitation, hallucinations, coma) and other symptoms such as body temperature above 38°C, increased heart rate, unstable blood pressure, as well as exaggerated reflex reactions, muscle stiffness, lack of coordination and/or digestive symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).

If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, you have a recurring cough, or a cough accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, consult your doctor or pharmacist. These may be signs of a serious condition.

Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children, at a temperature below 25°C.

Use of other medications

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or are planning to take.

Tussidex may interact with: quinidine, amiodarone (medicines used to treat heart rhythm disorders); fluoxetine (medicine used to treat depression); drugs that depress the central nervous system, e.g. sedatives, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The drug should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents

Do not use in children under 12 years of age.

Driving and operating machinery

Due to the possibility of drowsiness, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.
