Action:

Lactoferrin (LF) is a multifunctional protein of the transferrin family. Specifically:

• is a component of the immune system
• involved in iron transport
• regulates iron absorption
• controls free iron levels

In healthy individuals, almost all iron released into plasma binds to transferrin, limiting the production of iron-catalyzed free radicals and facilitating transport to target cells.

Iron can be stored intracellularly in the form of ferritin, a spherical heteropolymer capable of storing more than 4,000 iron atoms.

However, the role of iron is dual; on the one hand, it keeps us alive, and on the other, it can cause harmful effects. For this reason, organisms have developed complex mechanisms to ensure constant control of its levels.

Binding of free iron ions is crucial for protecting cellular components against uncontrolled oxidation.

There are several substances that fulfill this role. Another protein, similar to transferrin, is lactoferrin, which is present in Lactofer Iron Formula, and is found in milk and other physiological fluids.

It is also released by phagocytes upon stimulation, possibly to neutralize the diffusion of the damaging effects of reactive oxygen species to nearby healthy tissue sections. Like transferrin, it has the ability to bind two Fe3+ atoms per protein molecule.
